What Brands Actually Look for When Hiring a UGC Creator

I have been on both sides of the hiring conversation. Here is what actually gets a creator booked — and it is almost never follower count.

Every week a brand asks me some version of the same question: "How do I know if a creator is going to be good?" And every week a creator asks me the mirror: "How do I get on their list?"

The honest answer is that the checklist is shorter than either side thinks.

1. Can you sound like a person

The first ten seconds of your reel decide it. If your voice sounds like a script, brands scroll. If it sounds like you are actually talking to a friend, they save the profile. Everything else is downstream of that.

2. Do you shoot clean, usable footage

Not cinematic — usable. Natural light, sharp focus, framed so the product is legible, audio you can actually understand. A media buyer needs to trim and re-caption; give them footage that survives that.

3. Can you match their category

A skincare brand wants to see skincare. A tech brand wants to see hands-on demos. You do not need every category in your portfolio, but the one they are hiring for should be there and it should look native to their world.

4. Are you easy to work with

Faster than people admit. Brands re-book creators who reply within a day, hit deadlines, and send raw files organized in one folder. That reliability is worth more than another 50k followers.

5. Do you have a point of view

This is the tiebreaker. When two creators have the same rate and the same look, brands pick the one whose captions and voice-overs feel specific. A creator with an opinion is more memorable than a creator who is just polished.
